James Francis Campbell Tyrie (1877-1926)
Gateshead man served with Army Service Corps
The oldest of the Tyrie sons, by 1901 James was also a builder with his own company. The following year married Mary Louise Milne in the Congregational Church, Gateshead. Their son James Alexander was born in 1903.
On 9 October 1914 James enlisted with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) becoming RTS/3190, a horse transport strapper [someone who grooms horses], in the Remount Company of the Army Service Corps. He travelled to France just two weeks later and served there for the duration of the war, possibly driving supplies to and from the front areas, as well as being responsible for the care of the horses. He was discharged on 19 April 1919 and returned to Gateshead where he died in September 1926.
