William Tindale (1897-1916)

Hetton-le-Hole man served in the Royal Naval Reserve on HMS Malaya

William Tindale was born on 4 September 1897 in Hetton-le-Hole. His father was William Dodd Tindale (1863-1902) from Washington who worked as a flour warehouseman. His mother was Annie Surtees (1870-1937) who was born in Ryhope. His parents married in 1890 and three girls and three boys were born before father William died in 1902. At the time of the 1901 census the family lived in Bog Row, Hetton-le-Hole.

William’s mother married her second husband William High in Houghton-le-Spring in 1907. He was a coal miner who was originally from Waterhouses. Two children were born to this marriage before the 1911 census when the family lived at 57 Seventh Street, Horden.

William served in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) as stoker 7734/S. In 1916 he served on board HMS Malaya a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship. She participated in the Battle of Jutland as part of the Grand Fleet but otherwise her war service generally consisted of routine patrols and training in the North Sea.

William was reported to have died from cerebro-spinal fever on 4 August 1916. He was buried in Lyness Naval Cemetery on the Island of Hoy, Orkney, Scotland. His grave is at block B95. He is honoured on two war memorials in Horden.

William Tindale was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.

Hi, fantastic to read about my great uncle William. His sister Margaret was my grandmother, although she died before I was born. My father Thomas is still alive and passes the odd story that his mother told him about William. We plan on taking a trip to Lyness next summer to pay our respects. William's brother-in-law, my grandfather Thomas Robinson also fought in WW1 and won the Military Medal in France which has been passed onto myself. If any other family members wish to chat that would be great. Gary Robinson.
