Matthew William Wigham (1880-1941)


Consett man served with 1/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry


Matthew William Wigham was born in Blackhill, Consett, County Durham, in 1880. He always lived in this place, enlisting in the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in Consett on 7th September 1914, when he was 34. At that moment he was already married and had his first child.

He was first numbered 2431 and later 252092. On 19th April 1915, Wigham entered in France with 1/6th DLI.

He survived the war and was discharged in 1919 (according to Paragraph 392 of King’s Regulations, XXVa –“Surplus to military requirements. Not having suffered impairment since entry into the service.”)

Matthew William Wigham died in Blackhill when he was 60 years old.
