Photograph of members of 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry

Picture postcard found in a family collection from Consett

This postcard came in a collection of several cards from the Wigham family, of Consett.

Among the men who appear in the card is probably Matthew William Wigham (2431, later 252092), who served with 1st/6th Durham Light Infantry and entered in France in 1914/1915. It is thought that he might be one of the older men who are standing at the back as Matthew was 34 when he enlisted.

Their dress and boots suggest that they might be members of a sports team.

Dear Brian

I don't think that we can be really 100% sure. This photograph is part of John Sheen's collection and John does know it very well. I would guess that he has other photographs of Matthew William Wigham, or some other evidence, that would suggest that he is pictured here. As well as his collection, John has researched and written about the DLI extensively so if anyone is likely to know, it is him!

All the best
