Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin (1843 - 1926)


Prominent Darlington Quaker


Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin was born in Tottenham, Middlesex in 1843.

He married Mary Anna Pease in 1873 and they had six children.
He lived at Elm Ridge in Darlington and in the 1911 Census gave his occupation as ‘private means’.

He was a member of the Darlington Meeting House of the Society of Friends. He was frequently mentioned for the period 1914 – 1918 in the Minute Books for the Darlington Preparative Meeting.

J B Hodgkin is mentioned in the December 1914 issue of the ‘Leightonian’, the school magazine from Leighton Park Quaker School, Reading. The article mentioned that due to failing health, he had resigned as Chair of the Board of Governors.

According to the List of Burials for the Friends (Quaker) Burial Ground in Darlington, he died on 26/4/1926. His burial site is given the reference 478.
