Ronald Hodgkin (1880 - 1966)


Member of the Darlington Quaker Meeting


Ronald Hodgkin was born in Darlington on 23/7/1880 to Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin and Mary Anna Hodgkin (nee Pease).

He was a pupil at Leighton Park School, Reading (a Quaker school) and in 1899 was a student at Trinity College, Cambridge.

In the 1911 Census, his address was given as Elm Ridge, Darlington. He gave his occupation as secretary and listed his employer as a Chinese University.

He was a member of the Darlington Meeting House of the Society of Friends. He was frequently mentioned for the period 1914 – 1918 in the Minute Books for the Darlington Preparative Meeting.

The “Leightonian” School magazine for December 1914 listed his duties as:
– Secretary of Darlington Committee for Relief of Belgians
– Chairman of Ward Committee for distribution of War Relief
– Convener of Friends Hospital Committee

The April 1915 School magazine has mention of the marriage of Ronald Hodgkin to Jennett Rachel Backhouse at the Friends Meeting House in Staindrop on 23/2/1915.

The July 1916 copy of the “Leightonian” listed his duties as:
– Secretary of Darlington Belgian Committee
– Chairman of Ward War Relief Committee
– a Quaker chaplain to visit Conscientious Objectors in prison.
In the same issue, it mentioned that Ronald Hodgkin had been granted conditional exemption from military service.

Ronald Hodgkin died on 21/1/1966.
