Arthur James Robinson (1896-1918)

Arthur James Robinson was born in Hartlepool on 5 May 1896. His father was Arthur J Robinson, a blacksmith born in Darlaston, Staffordshire in 1863. His mother was Harriet Robinson nee Chew, a blacksmith’s daughter born in Bilston, Staffordshire in 1868. His parents married in West Bromwich, Staffordshire in 1890. By 1901 they had moved to 11 James Street, Hartlepool where they were still resident at the time of the 1911 census. They had seven known children giving Arthur four brothers and two sisters.
Arthur joined the Royal Navy on 15 February 1916 to serve for the duration of hostilities. He was initially rated as a stoker 2nd class and given the service number K30807. He was rated as a stoker 1st class on 22 April 1916. A note on his Navy service record dated July 1917 states “Cannot be spared to return to former civilian employment.” He died of pneumonia on 7 November 1918 at the age of 22. He was buried in North Cemetery, Hartlepool and is honoured on two memorials in the town.
Arthur James Robinson was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
