William Malford Platts (1895-1917)
Yorkshire man served with 1st/9th DLI
William Malford Platts was born in Saltaire, Yorkshire to John Thomas Platts, a cabinet maker for school furniture and Emma Platts. He had a brother four years older than him who worked as a grocery warehouseman. By the time of the 1911 census, William worked as a chemist apprentice, then later as assistant chemist. William enlisted on 11 December 1915 for the duration of the war (short service) to join the Durham Light Infantry and was mobilised on 5 March 1916. On 22 March 1916 he was posted to the 1st/9th Battalion. His Battalion was eventually sent to France, where William died on 23 April 1917.
