Ernest Ward (1888-1917)
Stockton man served with 1st/5th Battalion DLI commemorated at Arras
Ernest Ward was born in Walsall, Staffordshire, in 1888, the son of Herbert and Harriet Ward. He was a plate-layer for the North Eastern Railway. He married Maud Sarah and they had a son, Richard Ward Finney Ward. At the time of 1911 census the family were living at Port Clarence, although Richard had been born 10 months earlier in Darlington.
Ernest joined the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry as a private (202962). He was promoted to acting lance corporal (2239). Ernest was killed on 23 April 1917 while fighting with his battalion at Arras. His widow received his effects of £13 13s and a gratuity of £12 10s 8d.
According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Ernest’s widow lived at 60 Arlington Street, Stockton. It is also apparent that she remarried as she is recorded as Maud Sarah Conlin.
