Letters of John Walcote Gamble
Officer with 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry
These letters were written by Lieutenant John Walcote Gamble, 14th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, during his service in France and Belgium. At some point, they were typed and bound into a volume. The recipient has not been included, but it is likely that the letters were written to his mother and/or sister. There are two letters from after his death, one from Lieutenant Colonel George Feilden Menzies, Gamble’s commanding officer, and one from the army chaplain, Reverend Arthur Basil Brooker, to Gamble’s mother. Lastly, there is a piece of prose titled ‘Pencillings or Pennings at Dusk’, written shortly before his death, and found amongst his belongings that were returned home.
The letters has been transcribed by Durham at War volunteers and edited for some spellings and punctuation.
