Assistance for a Blind Soldier
At the Railway Hotel, Merrington Lane, on Saturday, a presentation of a purse of Treasury notes, amounting to £38, was made to Pte. Andrew Northcote, of Merrington Lane, who has, unfortunately, been deprived of his sight whilst fighting at the front. The money was subscribed by the inhabitants of Merrington Lane, Low Spennymoor, and Mount Pleasant by a house to house collection. The proceedings were presided over by Mr. W. Wynn, and in the unavoidable absence of Councillor J. G. Shaw, his son, Second-Lieutenant Shaw, made the presentation. He remembered well when they were boys and playmates together, and on behalf of the subscribers he had pleasure in asking Pte. Northcote to accept the gift. It may be stated that Pte. Northcote goes back to St. Dunstan’s hospital, London, to go through a trade training course. The committee wished to thank the residents for their generosity, and they would be glad to give attention to any further needy cases from their Affliction Fund…
