17th (Reserve) Battalion Sergeants Durham Light Infantry

Group photograph taken 1915

This photograph of the sergeants of the 17th (Reserve) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, was taken on 29th September 1915, but posted on 22nd December to Mr E Foster, Market Gardener, Post Office, Woodboro, Notts., with the following message: “Dear E, Thanks very much for the Xmas Box. I am over for a short time from Woking, Surrey. Wishing you a Merry Xmas, Yrs G W Smith.”

The only Sergeant G. W. Smith traced in the Durham Light Infantry was 3/9321, who served overseas with 2nd DLI after 1916.

The Commanding Officer, seated in the centre of the front rank, must be Colonel G. N. Caulfield who was commanding 17th DLI at the time the photo was taken.

Date: 29-Sep-1915
