Robert William Moore (1898-1918)
Stanley man served as a private in the Yorkshire Regiment
Robert William Moore was born in Stanley probably in 1898, although his year of birth is not entirely clear from records. Census and birth register indexes show his year of birth as 1898 but this does not match up with his age of death being given as 21 at the time of his death. Robert’s father was also called Robert William Moore and was a coal miner who was born in Birtley in 1876. His mother was Isabella Moore nee Close who was born in Tanfield in 1879. Robert’s parents married around 1895 and had four children made up of three boys and one girl. At the time of both the 1901 and 1911 censuses the Moore family lived at 2 George Street, Stanley. By the time of Robert’s death, his parents had moved to live at Oakey’s Cottages in Stanley.
Robert served in the Yorkshire Regiment as Private 44890 in the 6th and 2nd Battalions. He died of wounds received in action at St John’s Hospital in London on 14 October 1918. Robert’s body was returned home and he was buried in Stanley New Cemetery in grave 7 C 214. He is remembered on the Roll of Honour at St. Andrew’s church in Stanley.
Robert was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
