George Robert Lendrem (1893-1916)

Miner from Ushaw Moor who served with the 20th Hussars

The following information has been submitted by a family member:
George Robert Lendrem was born and raised in Durham. On the death of his father the family moved to Ushaw Moor where George worked in the mine as a coal hewer with his brother James. By this time, their older brother John William Lendrem had married and emigrated to the United States.

On the outbreak of war, James enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry, but George travelled to Sunderland to enlist with the 20th Hussars. James was invalided out of the army following the gas attack at Sanctuary Wood at the Battle of Ypres. George died a few months later at the Battle of the Somme. He is remembered at Thiepval Memorial in France and at St Luke’s Church in Ushaw Moor. The memorial on the outside of the Church used to be part of the Miner’s Welfare Club. Inside there is a smaller memorial with the names of all those from the colliery who died in the First War World. All three brothers enlisted. When the United States entered the war in 1917, James and Georges’ older brother John William enlisted with the United States First Army.

The following information has been added:
Born in 1893 George was the son of William, who worked as a carpet weaver, and Sarah Elizabeth Lendrem. He was one of seven children born to the couple. Following William’s death Sarah worked as a confectioner before marrying John William Wadsworth in 1903.

George served as part of the 20th Hussars, a cavalry regiment of the British Army. He began his service in France on 20 October 1915 as a private with the service number 10817. Having served with the Hussars for just under a year George was killed in action on 25 September 1916.
