Norman Campbell Robinson (1898-1918)

Stockton man served with 5th KOYLI buried in Cologne

Norman Campbell Robinson, the son of Joseph and Jane Yunnie Robinson, was born in Stockton-on-Tees on 13 November 1898. He had four brothers and appears to have lived all his life in the Stockton area until he was called up at Hartlepool and posted to the Training Reserve Battalion.

Little can be established about his service history, but at some stage he was transferred to the 5th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI). At a later stage he landed in France and in March 1918 was involved in the fighting. On 27 March, near Bullecourt, he was wounded in the thigh and captured by the enemy. He was sent to the prisoner of war camp at Limburg but was later transferred to the Reserve Hospital at Juelich, where he died of his wounds on 19 June 1918. He was buried in the local cemetery but was subsequently re-interred in the Cologne Southern Cemetery.

His gravestone bears the inscription:

“Ever remembered by father mother and brothers, Easington, Co. Durham”
