Joseph Henry Cox
Bishop Auckland man served with 15th DLI won the DCM during the '100 Days Offensive'
Little is known about Joseph Henry Cox. He enlisted in the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) early in the war and landed in France on 11 September 1915. He rose to the rank of sergeant and, in 1918, won the Distinguished Conduct Medal during the ‘100 Days Offensive’.
His award of the D.C.M. was gazetted on 1 March 1920 and the citation reads:
“At Montecouves Farm, Walincourt, on 6th October, 1918, when in charge of the signal section of the battalion he rendered invaluable service in maintaining communication. Later, when the lines were cut, he took his men forward and re-established communication. It was largely due to his high example of self sacrifice and gallantry that throughout the operations his commanding officer was acquainted with the position”.
