Ernest Cecil Jopling was born in Chester-le-Street, where he lived throughout his childhood. He moved with his family to Gateshead, where he was living in 1909 when he first enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) on 1 April 1909. He joined the army for a period of four years to reengage for periods of one year from 1913. He was a Lance Sergeant, with the number 622.
After the war, he re-enlisted again with the DLI on 18 March 1920, but this time, for a period of three years as a Sergeant Major, numbered 325994.
