For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of half the battery. The half battery was isolated and under heavy fire and S/Sgt Madden with great skill and courage, fought the half battery back and very considerably assisted in delaying the enemy advance.
Also awarded the Military Medal and was Mentioned in Despatches.
