From: 1918-Apr-27

Civil Parish: Durham

The following article appeared in the Durham Chronicle, 26 April 1918:

In aid of the widows and orphans of the minesweepers on the North Sea a football match will be played on the Hollow Drift ground on Saturday between girl teams hailing from Sunderland and Hartlepool. Since the war began over 220 boys and girls, ages from three years, have been taken care of at the East Coast Missions Sailors’ Orphan Colony, Newland, Hull, which is now a national institution open to any needy fatherless child of a sailor, fisherman, and riverman who are so bravely facing the perils of the deep for our safety. The mission was founded in 1821, and the sailors’ orphan homes in 1863 and in the orphan colony 3,462 children have been trained. The sum of £12,000 is wanted annually for maintenance, and £10,000 is wanted at once to provide more accommodation.
