Joseph Chandler (1919)
'Shot at Dawn'
Little is known about Joseph Chandler as his service papers have not survived. However, he lived in Gateshead with his wife, Nora, and served in the 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.
In 1918, four soldiers from the Lincolnshire Regiment, including Private Chandler, carried out a series of burglaries in Calais. During an argument over the spoils, Joseph Chandler killed one of the men and was subsequently arrested.
Court martialled and found guilty of murder, Joseph Chandler was executed by firing squad on 11 August 1919 and was buried in a military cemetery at Sangatte, near Calais.
