The message reads:

“Dear M E just a few lines hoping you are all well as I whent threw my opr a week past Wednesday, I was only in a week as they were short of beds. Dick had to get a cab, but I am afraid I have to go back as I can’t get out of bed I feal worse in stead of better so thats all for present. Thats my brother R Tench the tallest one in the back row. Mary, 20 Russell St, Teams, Gateshead.”

“R Tench” is Richard (Dick) Tench, Private 5055 of the 1/9th Battalion DLI.
