Diary of Arthur Henry Corner


Teacher at Tudhoe Colliery, 18th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry


Private Arthur Henry Corner’s diary begins properly on 1 January 1916 with the 18th Battalion in Egypt, though he notes that they arrived on 28 December 1915. The diary continues through the battalion’s move to France in March 1916 and ends later that month. On the inside covers of the diary are a list of French towns that Corner has passed through. Private Corner died of wounds received during the Battle of the Somme on 10 July 1916.

Windy
Thompson and Liddle crimed. Improving the trenches. On guard. Draughty guard room. Boddy obliges – at last.

11 February 1916
Hot
Trenching again. Indian camel corps in place of cavalry. Stocks pulled down – result guard. Ripping tea. Reading and singing.

11 March 1916
Raining
No parades. Sighted Pendus Isles about 10am. Entered Marseilles 11.30. Collided
with ‘Mosquito’. Boarded train 11pm.
