Drill Hall, Parklands, Castle Eden

15th Durham Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital

Type: Drill Hall

The Drill Hall at Parklands, Castle Eden is recorded as being used as the 15th Durham Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital during the First World War. The Parklands area is associated as being developed by Rowland Burdon in the late 1800’s, he certainly opened up nearby land for use as a rifle range in 1860. The buildings where the Drill Hall is located show up on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1894-1899 and are located within their own grounds to the east of the rifle range, possibly built initially as a private house with farm buildings.
