Born in Shotleyfield in 1893, throughout her life, Sarah Jane Anderson showed devotion to helping others – from her time as a servant in the Consett Infirmary under Dr William Beaton in 1911, through her service as a volunteer nurse in the Red Cross during the First World War. She served from 6 August 1918, to 7 April 1919, based at 5th Southsea General Hospital, Portsmouth.
Then, during the Second World war, Sarah Anderson worked as matron at the Swinton Grange Convalescent Home in Malton, Yorkshire. Beloved by family, she passed away from cancer in 1950.
