Samuel Pearson (1897-1918)
Catchgate resident served as a private in the 22nd DLI and the Labour Corps
Samuel Pearson was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland in 1897. His father was Thomas Cowan Pearson (1870-1960) from Ireland. His mother was Isabella Pearson nee Stalker (b 1871), a sawyer’s daughter from Cleator, Cumberland. His parents married around 1888. The 1911 census recorded that six children had been born during their marriage and that Samuel and a brother and sister were surviving. The Pearson family had moved to Catchgate by 1911.
Samuel Enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry (DLI). He served as Private 68 in the 22nd Service Battalion. He was wounded in France and on his recovery transferred to the Labour Corps as Private 551896. He died in an accident on 24 August 1918 in Denchworth, Berkshire and was buried in Harelaw Cemetery in grave 8 C 74.

Samuel Pearson was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
