George Graham Waine (1894-1916)


Barnard Castle man served with 14th DLI

George Graham Waine was a son of Watson and Elizabeth Waine and a brother of William Waine. George was born 1894, St Mary’s Durham. His siblings were William, Phillis Annie, Mary Grace, Elizabeth and Greta.

He resided with the family at 26 Bridgegate, Barnard Castle as per the 1911 census, he was a blacksmith’s striker. The family moved to 25 Thorngate, Barnard Castle some time following the census.

When he enlisted, George declared that he was a motor engineer. He attested into the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) on 7 September 1914.

George was killed in action on 13 February 1916, France and Flanders. He was a lance sergeant, regimental number 19117. His burial is recorded at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

Following the death of his brother William, killed in 1917, his parents had lost all of their four sons. Two died in infancy and two in combat.
