John "Jack" Dickinson (1898-1917)


Darlington man who served with 1st/5th and 1st/6th DLI died as prisoner of war


John (known as Jack) Dickinson, the son of Thomas Henry and Margaret Annie Dickinson, was born in Darlington on 24 September 1898. He had five brothers and five sisters and lived in Darlington all his life until he enlisted in the 1/5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (DLI) at Darlington. He was later transferred to the 1/6th Battalion and was wounded and captured in the spring of 1917. He was sent to the prisoner of war (POW) military hospital at Mulheim, where he died of blood poisoning on 30 April 1917.
