Thomas Bellwood (1892-1917)


New Shildon railwayman served with West Yorkshire Regiment killed at Arras

Thomas Bellwood was the son of William Bellwood and Elizabeth Vipond. He was born in Shildon, County Durham, England in 1892. Brother to Elizabeth, Frederick, Harry, Mary Louise, Matilda and half-brother to Joseph William and Mary Ann.

Thomas signed up for service with the British Army and was a soldier in the Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, 10th Battalion.

Thomas was killed in action near Arras in France, 12 May 1917, aged 25.

He has no known grave and is commemorated at the Arras Memorial

Thomas was husband to Esther Bellwood nee Swainston and father to one daughter, Ruby.
