John William Hussey (1880-1916)
High Hold miner served with 1st/8th DLI
According to Soliders Died in the Great War, John was born in Chopwell, but lived in Pelton at the time of joining up. However, there may have been some confusion over his birthplace as the 1881 census lists Medomsley; the 1891 census lists Chopwell and the 1901 and 1911 Spen (presumably Spennymoor) as the place where John was born. He was married to Ethel J Bradley in 1913 within Lanchester registration district.
He enlisted with 8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) with the service number 4226. He died of his wounds on 9 November 1916; he is buried at Etaples Military Cemetry, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
