William Angus Bagnall (1886-1960)


Winlaton man served with 9th DLI in Salonika


William Angus Bagnall was born on 29 July 1886, youngest son of Thomas William Bagnall and Emily Florence (nee Lane) of ‘The Groves’, Winlaton. He was educated privately and then at Armstrong College, Durham University. According to his Officer’s Record of Services Army Book, he joined the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Territorial Force in June 1908. We believe he joined the 9th Battalion. He was made a second lieutenant on 10 June 1908 and a lieutenant on 24 May 1910. On 23 October 1913 he was promoted to captain. His profession was a forgemaster and engineer working in the family company of R.S. Bagnall and Sons, Winlaton.

He was in the UK serving with 2nd/9th Battalion DLI until 31 October 1916. He was then part of the Expeditionary Force to Salonika which left on 1 November 1916. He continued to serve with the DLI until 29 September 1917 when he was transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders Garrison Battalion. He served with them from 30 September 1917 until 23 March 1918. On the 24 March 1918 he was transferred to the Rifle Brigade, 22nd Battalion and remained with them until his return to the UK. He also acted as Second in Command with the 22nd Battalion Rifle Brigade during the month of June 1918. He was still in Vetrina, (now Neo Petrici) Salonika on 16 December 1918. He relinquished his commission on 30th September 1921.

He married Lily Bacon on 24 March 1913 at Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had three children. William Angus Bagnall died in 1960.
