Matthew was guarding an ammunition dump when it blew up. His body was never found. His elder brother, Thomas, served with the Royal Marine Engineers and died in 1918 of the Spanish Flu. The youngest brother, John, died in infancy leaving his father with three daughters but no sons. Matthew's sister, Rose, was my maternal grandmother.
