Edward Williams (-1917)

Chopwell man served with 1st/9th DLI commemorated at Arras

Not much is known about Edward Willliams. He joined 1st/9th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry as Private 325512. There is some evidence he may have lived at Chopwell, as it is where he enlisted. Williams was sent to France alongside his Battalion, where he eventually was killed in action on 23 April 1917 during an attack on enemy trenches, along with 19 others.

The war diary extract for the 9th Battalion for that day records the attack, stating that the enemy trench was taken, however 6 officers were wounded (one dying later). Of the other ranks, 92 were wounded, 3 were missing and 20 were killed including Edward Williams. For his services, Edward William was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory medal. He was remembered on the Arras Memorial in France.
