George William Willis (1883-1917)
London engine cleaner served with 15th DLI commemorated at Arras
George William Willis was born about 1883, the son of George and Louise Willis in Poplar, Middlesex. In 1911 the family lived at 8 Uamvar Street, St Leonard’s parish, London. His father was aged 43, his mother was 39. His father was a locomotive driver. George William was an engine cleaner. He had two sisters, Edith Emily (aged 19) was a kitchen hand, the other, Ethel (aged 16) was a sheet machinist. George William enlisted first in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps as a Private (R/30511). He transferred to the Durham Light Infantry, 15th Battalion (Private 53153). He was killed on 3 May 1917. He was awarded the War and Victory medals. His mother received his effects of £2 3s 11d and a gratuity of £3. He is commemorated on Bay 8 of the Arras memorial.
