Ethel Nevison Ion (1882-)

Bishop Auckland woman served in the Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps

Ethel Nevison Ion was born in 1882 in Bishop Auckland. Her father was John Ion, a wagonman from Bampton, Westmorland. Her mother was Dorothy Jane Ion, nee Nevison, originally from Bishop Auckland. John and Dorothy married in 1882 and Ethel was the eldest of six children born to the couple. She had three brothers and two sisters, although her brother John died at the age of 14.

In 1891 Ethel was living at 35 Princess Street, Bishop Auckland with her parents and two of her siblings in her Grandmother Ann Nevison’s house. At the time of the 1901 census, Ethel’s uncle Henry Nevison was now head of the household at 35 Princess Street where the Ion family continued to live. The Ion family were still living at 35 Princess Street at the time of the 1911 census at which time Ethel’s father was head of the household. At the time of this census, Ethel was working as an office clerk for a fishing tackle manufacturer.

During World War One Ethel served as part of the Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps, previously known as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. She began serving on 22 August 1917 as a forewoman with the service number 2393. She continued to serve in this role until after the war on 10 January 1919.
