Smurthwaite Wilkinson (1883-1917)


Hartlepool man served with 1st/8th DLI commemorated at Arras


Smurthwaite Wilkinson was born in 1883 in Hartlepool to Solomon (a coal dealer) and Elizabeth Wilkinson. He was the fifth of seven children and attended St Aidan’s Church of England Primary school in West Hartlepool. In 1891 the family were living at 4 Portland Street, Seaton Carew. In 1901 the family were living at 2A Hilda Street, West Hartlepool and Smurthwaite was working as a general labourer. He married Isabella Nolan in 1902 and in 1911 Smurthwaite, Isabella and 4 children were living at 35 Longmore Street, West Hartlepool. He enlisted at West Hartlepool, and was killed in action on 25 April 1917.
