Frederick Gilbert Wilkinson (1892-1917)


Hull man served with 14th and 15th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial


Frederick was born in 1892 in Sculcoates, Hull, the second son of William Greaves and Martha Augusta Wilkinson. He lived with his parents at 100 Peel Street, Hull until he joined the Army. In 1911 he was an assistant in a wholesale boot warehouse and in 1915 he is described as a boot salesman.

Frederick attested at Hull on 11 December 1915 and was mobilised in February 1916, joining the 14th East Yorks Regiment as private 22460. In April 1916 he was appointed lance corporal (paid) and then promoted to acting corporal. In September 1916 he was posted to 90th Training Reserve Battalion (80121). In December 1916 he was posted first to 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and then 15th Battalion DLI. Frederick was killed in action on 10 April 1917.
