Harold White (1890-1917)


Hull man served with 14th and 15th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial


Harold was born in 1890 in Hull to William (a bricklayer) and Mary Ann White. He was their youngest son. Until he joined the Army, he lived with his parents at 63 Carlton Street, Hull. In 1911, and at attestation, he was working as a grocery shop assistant. Harold attested at Hull on 10 December 1915 and was mobilised on 8 February 1916. He joined the 14th (reserve) Battalion, East Yorks Regiment as private 22466. Later that year he was promoted to lance corporal and then to acting corporal. In September 1916 Harold was transferred to 90th Training Reserve Battalion and then, in December, he was posted first to 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and subsequently to 15th Battalion DLI. On 10 April 1917 he was killed in action.
