John Vallans (1891-1917)


Colliery labourer from Blaydon served in 1st/5th DLI is commemorated on the Arras Memorial


John Vallans, the son of George and Margaret Vallans, was born in Blaydon in 1891. He had a brother and two sisters and he lived with them in the same house all his life until he enlisted in the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) at Blaydon. He was killed at the Battle of Arras on 23 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras and Blaydon Memorials and in the Durham Cathedral DLI Book of Remembrance.
