Charles Alfred Mordey (1896-1918)


Sunderland man served with 20th DLI father was also killed


Charles Alfred Mordey, the son of Charles Alfred and Catherine Mordey, was born in Sunderland in July 1896. He had four brothers and five sisters and lived in Sunderland until he enlisted in the 20th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in his home town on 28 October 1915. He landed in France on 5 May 1916 but was repatriated a year later, suffering from dysentry. In June 1916 he returned to France but was then shipped to Italy where he arrived on 17 November 1917. He returned to France four months later and was killed in the second Battle of Ypres on 10 May 1918, almost exactly a year after his father. He is buried in the ‘Perth’ or ‘China Wall’ Cemetery in Ypres and commemorated in the Durham Cathedral and Sunderland Books of Remembrance.
