George Henry Taman (1899-1917)


London man served with 15th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial


George Henry Taman was born around 1899 the son of Henry and Sarah Taman of 69 Ashburnlem Grove, Greenwich, London. By 1911 the family had moved to 18 Luxford Street, Rotherhide. His father Henry was 56 at the time and worked as a labourer, his mother Sarah was 50, his sister Florence was 16 and in domestic service. There were two other sisters at the time; Jessie aged 15 and Doris aged 10. George Henry being 12 was still at school but became a compositor apprentice when he left school.

George signed an attestation form on 10 February 1916 and initially joined the army as a Private number (R/31027) in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He later transferred to the Durham Light Infantry as a Private (number 53147), 15th Battalion. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was killed on 10 April 1917 and is commemorated on Bay 8 of the Arras Memorial. His mother received his effects of £4 1s 11d and a gratuity of £3.
