Thomas Henry Smith (1896-1917)
Apprentice printer from Longton who served in 1st/5th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial
Thomas Henry Smith, the son of Thomas Webster and Charlotte Smith, was born in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire in 1896. He had a brother and two sisters and lived in the Longton area of Stoke-on-Trent until he joined the army. In 1911 he was an apprentice printer and later enlisted at Longton in the Durham Light Infantry in the 10th Battalion and was later transferred to the 1st/5th Battalion. He was killed in action at the Battle of Arras on 23 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and in the Durham Cathedral and St. Thomas’ Church, Stockton-on-Tees Books of Remembrance.
