Ernest Albert Short (1897-1917)
From Devon, served in 18th Battalion DLI (Durham Pals), killed in action at Arras
Ernest Albert Short, the son of Charles and Bessie Alma Short, was born in Frithelstock, Torrington, Devon in the summer of 1897. He had seven brothers and lived near Torrington all his life. He initially joined the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry at Torrington and was later transferred to the 18th Battalion DLI. He was killed in action at the Battle of Arras on 18 May 1917.
