Albert Edward Shone (1897-1917)


Son of a Yorkshire Publican served with the 1st/5th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial


Albert Edward Shone, the son of John William and Sarah Elizabeth Shone, was born in Ormesby, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire on 30 May 1897. He had a sister and the family later moved west to Upsall and then back to Billingham near Middlesbrough. He joined the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry at Stockton-on-Tees and arrived in France on 17 April 1915. He rose to the rank of corporal and was killed at the Battle of Arras on 24 April 1917.
