John Mooney (1893-1917)
From Leeds, served with 1st/6th Battalion DLI, killed in action at Arras
John Mooney, son of John & Harriett Mooney, was born in Bruntcliffe, a suburb of Leeds, in 1893. He had two sisters and lived in the same road all his life.
When the First World War began in 1914, John joined the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry at Dewsbury but later transferred to the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. John was killed on 14 April 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance & Morley War memorial.
