Robert McMahon (1895-1917)
Coal Miner from Tow Law served with 1st/6th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial
Robert McMahon was born in Tow Law in 1895, the son of Thomas and Rose McMahon. Robert had two brothers and three sisters and married Eleanor Watson at Bishop Auckland in 1916. He lived in Tow Law all his life. He joined the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry and was killed at the Battle of Arras on 14 April 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance and two memorials in Tow Law.
