James Risden Marvell (1891-1917)
Bradford man served with 1st/8th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial
James Risden Marvell, the son of William (Willie) and Edith Marvell, was born in 1891 in Bradford, Yorkshire. He had three brothers and three sisters and lived all his life in the Bradford area. In 1912 he was a Boot and Shoe Maker and married Eveline Haigh in Manningham, Bradford and they had two children. On 24 June 1916 he enlisted in the 1st/5th Battalion North Riding Regiment and was subsequently transferred to the 1st/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed at the Battle of Arras on the 14 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, the Bradford First World War Roll of Honour and in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance and the Battalion History of the 1st/8th DLI (1793-1927).
