Davison Robert Gray (1887-1917)
South Shields man served in 10th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial
Davison Gray was born in 1887 in the Byker area of Newcastle.
His parents were John and Margaret and he had 8 siblings, Richard, John, Margaret, Mary, Dora, James, Catherine, Elizabeth and Patrick. The 1891 and 1901 censuses show the family living in Heworth but in 1911 they had moved to South Shields.
He married Mary Corby (known as Polly) Russell in 1912 and they had one son Robert, who was born on 25 December 1916.
The 1901 census shows Davison working as an apprentice butcher but in the 1911 census he is described as a general labourer, plate laying.
Davison enlisted at South Shields and joined 10th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He was given the service number 32798.
Davison was killed in action on 10 April 1917.
His name appears on the Arras Memorial and in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance.
