Henry Gorrill (1895-1917)


Son of a Yorkshire publican served with 1st/8th DLI is commemorated on the Arras Memorial


Henry Gorrill, the son of Samuel and Hannah Gorrill, was born in Warmsworth, Yorkshire in 1895 and had a sister. In 1911 he was working in Maltby Main Colliery and on 11 December 1915 enlisted at Pontefract in the 21st King’s Royal Rifles. He was mobilised on 14 March 1916 and arrived in France on 5 November. The following day he was transferred into the 1st/8th Durham Light Infantry. He was wounded on 25 April 1917 at the 2nd Battle of the Scarfe and died of his wounds the following day.
