Albert Bruce Coatman (1896-1917)
Spennymoor man served with 6th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial
Albert B. Coatman was born in Spennymoor in 1896. His parents were Christopher Coatman and Mary Jane Coatman, and in 1911 he lived in Johnsons Avenue. He enlisted to fight with the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI), which was sent to France.
Albert was killed at the battle of Arras. The date of his death suggests that he was killed at one of the engagements of the second battle of the Scarpe River. He won the British war Medal and Victory Medal for his service, and is memorialised at the Arras memorial in France.
