Charles William Bean (1897-1917)


South Bank man served in 1st/5th DLI honoured on Arras Memorial


Chares William Bean was born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire in 1897. His father was Robert Edward Bean (1873-1930), a Middlesbrough-born blast furnace labourer. His mother was Rebecca Grey (1876), from Sherburn where her father was a fruiterer. His parents married in 1896 in Durham. He had two sisters and two brothers. In 1891 they lived in 9 Tyne Street, South Bank, Middlesbrough. At the time of the 1911 census they were living at 48 Arlington Street, Stockton-on-Tees. Charles was employed as a grocer’s clerk.

Charles probably joined up in 1915 after his 18th birthday. He joined the 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He served as a private with the number 200483. In late April 1917 Charles and his battalion were involved in the Second Battle of the Scarpe near Arras in France. On 23 April 1917, on the opening day of that battle, he was killed in action. He was 19 years old. He was one of three officers and 56 men of his battalion who were lost that day.

Charles’ body was not identified for burial in a named grave. He is honoured on the Arras Memorial, Arras, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France (bay 8). He is also honoured in the Book of Remembrance 1914-18, Durham Light Infantry, Durham Cathedral. In his home town he is recorded in the Book of Remembrance 1914-1918, Saint Thomas’ Church Stockton and the Book of Remembrance 5 DLI also in Saint Thomas’ Church.

Charles William Bean was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in the First World War.
